What Is Local SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Local Business Owners

What local SEO is, how Google decides which local businesses to show, and the first steps that make the biggest difference for your business.

Key takeaways

  • Local SEO helps your business appear when people nearby search for what you offer, in Google Search, Google Maps and AI tools.
  • Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
  • Your Google Business Profile, website, reviews and listings across the web are the signals you control.
  • Most businesses start seeing considerable results within 45 to 60 days. Highly competitive markets can take up to 6 months.

If you run a roofing company, a dental clinic, a salon or any business that serves people in a specific area, most of your new customers start with a search. They type something like "roofer near me" or "emergency plumber in Austin", look at the first few results, and call one of them. Local SEO is the work that makes your business one of those first few results.

What local SEO actually means

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Local SEO is the part of it that focuses on location: showing up for people who are near you, or searching for a service in the area you cover.

The simplest way to think about it is signals. Google cannot visit your business, so it relies on information it finds online to decide what you do, where you do it and whether customers can trust you. Local SEO means making those signals clear, consistent and strong.

Where local results show up

When someone searches for a local service, your business can appear in several places:

  • The Map Pack: the box of three businesses with a map, near the top of Google results.
  • Google Maps: when people search directly in the Maps app.
  • The regular results: the list of websites below the Map Pack.
  • AI answers: Google’s AI Overviews and assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which increasingly recommend businesses directly.

The Map Pack and Google Maps are driven mainly by your Google Business Profile. The regular results are driven mainly by your website. AI answers draw on both, plus reviews and mentions of your business around the web.

How Google decides which businesses to show

Google’s own help page on local rankings names three main factors. Understanding them makes everything else easier:

  1. Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for. A complete profile and clear service pages make this obvious.
  2. Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location in their search. You cannot change where you are, but you can make the areas you serve clear.
  3. Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is. Reviews, ratings, links and mentions on other websites all add to it.

The signals you control

  • Your Google Business Profile: the right categories, services, service areas, hours, photos and regular updates. See our Google Business Profile checklist.
  • Your website: a clear page for each main service, the towns or areas you cover, and direct answers to common customer questions.
  • Reviews: a steady flow of genuine reviews, and thoughtful replies to them.
  • Citations: your business name, address and phone number listed the same way on trusted directories.
  • Links and mentions: local websites, associations and partners that mention or link to you.

Where to start

If you are starting from scratch, this order usually gives the fastest return:

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and fill in every field.
  2. Choose the most accurate primary category for what you do.
  3. Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere they appear.
  4. Create or improve one page on your website for each main service.
  5. Ask recent happy customers for an honest review, and reply to every review you get.

How long does local SEO take?

It depends on your competition. In our experience, most businesses start seeing considerable results within 45 to 60 days: more visibility, more calls and more enquiries. In less competitive markets, rankings can start moving within about 30 days. In highly competitive markets, reaching the top positions can take up to 6 months.

Be careful of anyone who guarantees a number one ranking. Google decides what to show, and nobody controls it directly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Stuffing keywords into your business name on your profile. Google’s guidelines say your profile name should match your real-world name, and breaking this can get a profile suspended.
  • Inconsistent details across directories, such as an old phone number or a different address format.
  • Ignoring reviews, or worse, buying fake ones. Fake reviews break Google’s policies, and in the US the FTC can fine businesses for them.
  • One generic page that tries to cover every service and every area at once.
